Thanks for the insight everyone. The road is all paved nicely and looks 'adoptable' - even the original drawings the developer gave me show the road in front of our house highlighted in a colour that the legend says 'to be adopted' if that gives any clarity to the developer's initial intentions. I can see it not being a huge expense down the line if we're responsible, but I am actually quite reluctant to pay £500 a year having not been informed of this at the start. Hopefully that won't be the case. I'd rather wait to find a house with no yearly maintenance fees as that's quite a bit to me and we discounted even looking at another nice house because of that very issue.
It seems a very quiet road and it's only a cul-de-sac in a small village, so not anticipating lots of traffic. All the houses have parking for 2 cars, except maybe the few 2 beds where it may be off street parking for only one, so I think parking shouldn't cause major problems...
Hopefully the paperwork for the highway authority to adopt it is pending or something...0 -
To be clear
£500 per annum for us is for far more than maintaining the road.
Clearing out gullies, gutters etc once a year split between 20 properties isn't going to be a heavy burden at all.
I have to say that, in my experience anyway, households have large numbers of cars between them. As has been suggested parking may be an issue and having private parking companies patrolling is not conducive to the best of neighbourly relations!0 -
Might you be forgetting potholes, line repainting, resurfacing?
Not every year, no. But they will need doing.0 -
