estimated energy bills

So...

The situation which is causing me a fuss is that I'm living in a 7 bedroom residence. My housemates hate me, and the bills have come through. They're trying to make me pay an extortionate amount for the gas and electric. I pay £70 and they pay ~£25 a piece.

The reasoning is that I was the only one here for January whereas they were not. The bills are estimated. I have many questions so I'm just going to tell you my living style and ask some questions.

I shower once a day. use a hairdryer. The heating was at room temp, but only on in the rooms I was using at any time. I cook and washup by hand. admittedly I do alot of cooking, it's my hobby.

I would like to know how the water heater works. i.e. does having a daily shower and washing up increase gas usage?

I would like to know how the bills are estimated. I was told that it is done based on last years readings, estimated by number of beds, area, and time of the year. Is this a complete list of factors?

In essence - would the bill have been the same if they were here or not? what would make the bill vary?

many thanks for any help I get, this is causing a lot of trouble.

Why not read the meters ?

    Welcome to the forum.

As said in post#2 why not read the meters and give the readings to the supplier and ask them to issue a revised bill based on an actual reading.

Any use of hot water and heating, increases the consumption of gas and use of ovens, lighting, appliances increases the use of electricity - but it is very difficult to quantify the increase.

We reqularly get posts with similar disputes - usually from student houses. The disputes are usually about some people having fan heaters in their room, having boyfriend/girlfriend staying overnight and cooking having baths etc, some going home weekends other staying, clothes washing taken home etc.

The only way to stop endless rows is to share the costs evenly or move out!

There probably is no real way to share the costs - perhaps divide the monthly bill by the number of person nights ?
