Car repair: time-limit under warranty?
Hi,
The differential/gearbox went on my car two weeks ago - car still has used-car warranty. (The warranty was directly with the village garage/MOT station selling the car, not an insurance-type).
They've had the car for 2 weeks now and every time I call, they say "call back later in the week, we'll know more" or something similar.
Apparently, due to the rarity of the car spares don't exist (low production run and the car being 2004 - but only 50k miles), so the gearbox is being rebuilt by a third-party specialist.
I'm car-less, they don't have a courtesy car and say they can't pay for a hire car.
The warranty is ticking away and at the end of the month wlll expire.
The garage isn't local to me, so I can't get there easily or quickly to eyeball them.
Is there any time-limit on repairs? E.g. a reasonable time period? I looked on CAB and Trading Standards but couldn't see any reference to repair times. Just wondered if someone here might know the regulations on repair times, and what is an unreasonable time to wait.
I'm trying to be reasonable as that's usually the best approach for customer service, but I think my geniality is making easy for them to fob me off. They say that most insurance schemes wouldn't have covered the gearbox as it's 'wear and tear'...
Many thanks,
Maz

Normal procedure is that what counts is when the fault is reported and verified. I had an issue with my E Class that was reported during the dealer's warranty, and 6 months after the end of the warranty, the dealer managed to replicate the fault and they fixed it as if under warranty. This was a Mercedes main dealer.
Out of interest, what is the car?0
