Ok so I sort of agree with the clocks reverting to GMT late October, (ie 2 months before the shortest day) but why do we have to wait such a long time for the welcome change in Spring?
Surely it could change a month earlier - late Feb, rather than 30th March 2008 so we would only have 4 months of GMT rather than 5 - and a whole lot more lighter evenings.
(And why not put the clocks forward at mid-day - I don't have my lunch until 1:00 and it would come round a lot quicker that day without missing an hour in bed)
I like this idea change the clocks the last weekend in February......what would be the arguments against this????.
.........i once was a nursing mother and I remember thinking years ago, when the farmers argument was put forward, having to milk the cows earlier...........eh cmon........my baby cant tell the difference, she still woke me up at the same time. and I had to get out my cosy bed.........granted I didnt have to walk a coupla miles in the dark in a field full of cowpats :rotfl:
Im in Central Scotland and I would prefer to go to work in the dark but have an extra hour of daylight in the eveningcheerio hen0 -
What about changing GMT by half an hour and leaving the clocks at that, halfway between the current Winter and Summer settings? Then you get an extra half an hour of light for winter mornings but don't need to keep changing the clocks back and forward.
There are probably a number of reasons why this couldn't be done but i am too stupid to think of them and no doubt someone who knows will fill us in...0 -
This was trialled in the late 1960s and was very successful. Most people felt it was a better way of doing things - apart from two main groups, the Scots and the farmers.
Oddly, these two groups carried a lot of weight in parliament (and probably still do) so the experiment was scrapped.
Most people would rather have the extra hour's light at the end of the day, it's been shown to reduce road accidents (particularly schoolchildren), and yet we're still stuck with putting the clocks back to please the Scots and the farmers!0 -
I seem to have missed out on this, however, a William Willet decided that we peasants would not benefit from the extra daylight hours so wanted to change the clocks accordingly. Eventually (during the last war years) he managed to persuade enough people to enable the clocks to change but only ON CONDITION they were changed back in the autumn.
I thought lunacy wasn't contageous.
Only modern man works to a mechanically precise clock prior to that clocks worked 'to the sun', only trains travelling laterally found a time difference that needed correcting.
Enter William Willet!!

Nah I meant can't they just have a different time zone in Scotland?....
Ah an interesting idea I think. That means we can move all the car accidents from the morning/ evening (whichever statistics suit) to the A1/M1 as people attempt to change their clocks while driving over the border.
I'm a fan of putting the clocks forward and back since I'm a minority Scot. Though to be honest, I have nearly forgotten what daylight looks like since I have seen so little of it.Live on £4000 a year - £37.26/£3000
