E.on - all tariffs compulsory smart meter except EnergyPlan

On checking the tariffs available on my online account I notice that all the tariffs - even the more expensive ones - except EnergyPlan (standard variable rate) now require you to agree to a smart meter if E.on can fit one. They were already charging a premium to avoid one but now that option is gone.

I think this is very poor practice and shows desperation on the part of E.on to get people on to smart meters.

I think I will be leaving in May when my current fixed tariff expires. Some of us just don't want to have smart meters forced upon us and up to now we had a choice - albeit an expensive choice.

E.on have in effect made smart meters as good as compulsory if your only option otherwise is EnergyPlan - watch and see if they take that away as well ...

Please could you feed this back to the powers that be Malc and Helena. I know there is nothing you can do about it but it's sharp practice.

Like yourself will be looking elsewhere once my current deal with them ends. Extremely disappointing that they’ve decided to force smart meters onto people even though they are still perfectly capable of running their systems without them (as evidenced by both their standard tariff not requiring one and also the ‘secret’ deal they’re offering MSE energy club users that doesn’t require one either).

Eon won't be the only supplier doing this. Firms face government penalties if they don't install enough smart meters.

However, as Gaikokujin says read the other thread, as it's possible to get around this and depending on where you live, they may not be able to install one anyway..

Hello abiabc and thank you for your feedback. I've passed this on to the relevant people here at E.ON.

I'm sorry you're disappointed with this decision. As gt94sss2 says, it might not be possible to fit smart meters. They aren't available everywhere yet as it depends on things like the actual area, type of property, strength of the mobile phone signal and the current metering set up. We won't know until our smart meter specialists are in touch.

If it turns out we can't fit smart meters, customers will be able to stay on the tariff.

Thanks again for the feedback abiabc.

Thank you for your feedback, too, Gaikokujin. As above, I've passed this on.

The E.ON Fixed 2 Year MSE Collective Feb 19 tariff is available to both existing and new customers. As you say, this tariff doesn't have the smart meter condition.

Sorry you're disappointed with this decision Gaikokujin.

  • And what is wrong with that? You will find more and more will be following EON's ways.

If you don't want a smart meter, that is fine. However, as times goes on, you will probably find yourself with limited suppliers.
