Electric shower issue

Hi, I was wondering if someone could give me some advice.
My electric shower has started struggling to turn on. If you press the button, the light that shows it is on comes on for a second and a blast of water comes out before stopping.
This has been happening for a couple of weeks, and if you keep jabbing the on button eventually the shower will start properly and will run fine (no cutting out once it has properly started). Obviously this is not ideal as I have to furiously jab the on button about 20 times each morning before my shower, but this morning it just would not kick in properly at all, no matter how many times I pushed the button it just kept cutting out straight away. Also (and this has not happened as far as I'm aware) the water coming out this morning was increasing in temperature until it was scalding hot.
Eventually I gave up and used the shower in the other bathroom (not electric). Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this and if it's something that could potentially be fixed DIY. I have no experience with this sort of thing and obviously am concerned about electrocuting myself.
Also, if it isn't a simple solution, would I call a plumber or electrician for this?
Thanks for your help

Airlock in the cold feed pipework?
What shower (make and model)?0 -
Could be the solenoid valve. I have changed these before DIY. Shower make/model may help others give more assistance as nofoollikeold suggests.YNWA

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I'm not at home at the moment so don't have the make/model in front of me but I will update once I can.0

Have a look on showerdoc for your shower. When mine packed up, I couldn't buy an individual part. It came as a unit which was the same price as a brand new electric shower. So I bought a brand new electric shower instead.0
