Completely lost. Where do I start with this from.

Options
One of the rooms in our house which is due to become a kids room is very cold. The damp and mould appear there regularly.

The room is partly above the walkway which doesn't helps either.

What I am finding really difficult is that having no building background whatsoever I don't know where to go to get the things done.

I am not in the position of hiring different tradesmen and telling them what needs to be done as I have no clue what I need to be done to make the room nice, warm, an habitable for the kids to live in.

I would really need some one to come look at the room location, house construction, issues there an tell me that I need A,B and C done to get where I need.

I would then be able to hire people to do the required works.

Bur I have no clue who do I look for and where to have the above assessment done.

  • Might be difficult to answer but...

Does it have a window? Double glazed? Any water inbetween the glass (indicating a failed unit)? On a windy day check around the edges of the part that opens to see if you can feel any draughts where the widow isn't closing 100%?

Is it heated and if so is it effective? If there's a radiator does it fully heat up.

After that you are looking at insulation, assuming an upstairs room what is above? If a loft space is it insulated?

What is the floor made of, can you for example lift floorboards and insulate under the floor to prevent cold come upwards into the room?

Internal walls generally shouldn't lose that much heat, exterior walls can be insulated either from the outside or on the inside (will lose a bit of space doing this).

Mold is usually caused by a lack of ventilation, despite the cold opening the window for an hour a day to refresh the air may help. also use a mold remover spray to kill the mold rather than just bleach which may not kill the roots of the mold meaning it comes back quicker.
