Hi All
I was wondering if anyone could advise on what to do with a mouldy bathroom ceiling.
All through the winter I was opening the bathroom window after showering to let the steam out. Lots of mould started to form on the ceiling and I have since learnt that you shouldn't open the window as thats what causes it (whoops!).
I now need to cover the mould on the ceiling. Can I just paint straight over it? Or do I need to treat it with something first?
Thanks

First things first , is there a working extractor fan ?
If yes then look at upgrading to more powerful fan and humidity sensor which will allow a trickle flow while moisture is detected.
Modern fans are alot quieter if you get the right oneEx forum ambassador

It is not just the visible steam, but the condensation on the walls/ ceilings/ tiles/ glass/ shower curtain that needs to be removed to avoid mould.
Mould growth suggests you are not ventilating enough (opening more windows, and/ or opening windows for longer, and/ or squeejeeing the whole shower area, and/ or using a decent extractor fan for longer, and/ or using a dehumidifier nearby).
The affected area should be treated with a mould and mildew killer, and allowed to dry out fully before repainting.

yes we have an extractor fan and i've started leaving this on for a hour or two after showering
I guess in the summer it is ok to open the window?0 -
Opening the window does not cause mold. Damp is the issue. Steam condensing from showering is a good example. Heating and ventilation help prevent it. A bathroom paint is better than a normal emulsion, if there are stains on the walls before you paint might be worth a coat of Zinsser primer stain stop, unlike Polycell and Ronseal it does work.

It is desirable to open windows for fresh air all year round. Poor indoor air quality is increasingly recognised as a major health risk.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0
