Has anyone had a successful PIP claim for mental health

Just the above really, Im talking about severe mental health issues where day to day living requires support - a family member has to provide support for day to day life such as meals /cleaning / getting to appointments etc etc etc times a million

Just trying to work out if it is worth the stress for the poorly person involved - as it does seem very long winded and involved x

Lots of people successfully claim PIP for mental health reasons but you can't compare 2 people. Everyone's affected differently by these conditions.

PIP isn't awarded based on the PIP descriptors, it's how those conditions affect you against the PIP descriptors.

Evidence will be needed to support a claim as they rarely contact anyone for any evidence.

Expect a face to face assessment as most people have them. It's rare to have a paper based assessment.

Yes, it's a long process, which can take several months depending on backlog in your area. If not successful then the process can take even longer.

If you think you the family could qualify then they will need to ring to the PIP helpline to start the claim off.

I'd advise getting some help from an advice centre near them for help with completing the forms if they decide to start a claim.

  • Thank you both

The person I am talking of, they have a benefits team, based at their housing co-op, assisting them with the claim, and have already sent off for the claim pack

I was just wondering as you hear horror stories of pple who are terminally ill and clearly in desperate need, who are being refused PIP - and protective as I am, I would not want the young person to go through filling out the massive form, an assesment and then be knocked back, as it is going to cause massive MASSIVE anxiety whilst waiting on it ..and if they are going to get knocked back, it would not be worth the potential mental health crisis that the application could possibly throw them in to

I remember when this particular person applied for ESA and had an assessment and it was a very difficult process for them to endure. Extreamly hard with the anxiety and worry as it is so very drawn out, over months, and the worry of getting knocked back caused two hospital admissions, and that was just for ESA, which thankfully was accepted

    thank you both x

Part of my day job is in a hospital mental health ward and I've met a number of people there who've made successful PIP claims for mental health needs.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Well , today, the claim form has gone in.

What can they expect next :-

Will there be a face to face assessment, similar to what they had for ESA?

How long is a typical wait for folks?

    Many thanks x

I told you everything you need to know in my comment above. You also started a new thread about this. Try to keep to one thread because it gets very confusing other wise.
