In this instance, although it's a partner they're treating it like she's a lodger and possibly paying over the odds for the privilege.
So basically it boils down to whether the person paying is a partner or not.
The person doesn't have to be your partner, as your adult children paying "keep" also isn't considered taxable income. It's whether they are considered a part of your household or whether it's a business transaction ie purely accomodation for money. Like many things it's not cut and dried so some scenarios could be argued to be either way. However a partner who shares your bedroom or your child giving you some money towards the household running costs is definitely not a business relationship and a stranger who pays you the going rate for your spare room which you advertised is definitely a business relationship. A friend staying at yours and giving you money would depend on the details, but unless it was some short term favour for a token amount the money would be considered income but it would have to exceed the annual "rent a room" allowance before there was any tax to pay.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0
