Shower Advice Needed please :)

Options
Hi everyone!

I've been 5 years procrastinating and have decided I need to get on with getting our nasty broken bathroom sorted out, finally!

I really am hoping for advice on the shower at the moment. We have a combi boiler which is around 5 years old, and a shower/mixer tap in the bathroom at present (which is falling apart). It's not working well, we have two teenage kids and two adults in the house so if someone is in the shower, somebody else will inevitably switch on a tap or whatever and there'll be a lot of shouting as the shower goes solar or polar.

We'd like to get a thermostatic shower but I'm open to an electric shower if this would solve that problem. Having said this however...we have a Triton electric shower in the equally knackered ensuite which is also affected if someone runs the taps! That changes temperature too. That is being replaced at some point too (not sure which type to get, the opposite type to the one in the other bathroom so we have one electric shower in case of boiler problems).

It's so frustrating, is there a way around this or a certain brand we need to be looking at please?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer. I'm promising myself I'm going to buy a shower with the next couple of weeks and get the bathroom refit ball rolling at last! It's a bit scary, all that money and having people in

Best wishes
Lucy

You need to consider your water pressure and heating system.

From that youre probably looking towards a thermostatic mixer shower.

Electric is an option but having electrics installed in a bathroom is going to cost a lot more than just having a thermostatic mixer fitted and they break more and are more difficult to fix (normally easier just replacing).

You shouldnt get temperature changes with a themostatic mixer, the idea behind them is they only allow the correct mixture of hot and cold through to maintain the temperature. If you open up another tap taking cold water, it should just restrict the amount of hot water it allows through.

Thanks so much for your reply, apologies for the delay getting back (poorly child).

It's good to hear that the thermostatic mixer should regulate the temperature. We stay at a self catering place where they have thermostatic showers and those tend to run cold when the tap is run or the washer is on, I'm guessing this could be a fault with that one?

I'll start having a look at the best ones to get. It's so daunting where to start with the bathroom but this has helped, thanks again!
  • If your going electric id recommend the Mira Sport showers, if regulated then a Grohe system

I have a Mira Excel its a powerful shower,
If anyone turns another tap on in the house there is a slight drop in the water power but temperature stays fine.
I do have good water pressure though

before fitting a thermostatic shower make sure your combi has enough hot water flow. Look in the book or contact the manufacturers for advice.

Sorry for the late reply! Still looking as we have chickened out and we're doing the living room first instead. Thanks so much for the suggestions, we'll have a look at those showers :) The boiler is a pretty big one (I made sure when I chose it that it was sufficient) but I'll double check that as we're replacing radiators too. Thanks :)
