Mobile phone no needed

Many banks and savings organisations now require a mobile phone number to verify transactions. Where do those of us who have no mobile signal stand?

    Moving to a new company?
(They can require whatever they want, not that it is great security, there are better options out there).
  • I've got a fob for M&S Bank, and card readers for Nationwide, Natwest (both personal) and Lloyds (business), so none of those require a phone. Also I believe the apps for HSBC and First Direct don't need a signal to verify transactions.

Either on one leg up a tree looking for that single strength bar on the phone , or with one of those WiFi extender boxes.
  • I have tried using the HSBC app with data turned off and it gives me an error message.
Obviously if you get the physical device instead of the Digital Secure Key, then no internet is required.
  • HSBC are introducing SMS authentication for credit/debit online payments shortly. Last week when I registered a new secure key (physical) after the old one's battery ran down, I needed an authentication code. I had the choice of receiving it either via my mobile or email. Not sure if they will offer email for the credit card payments. I do have an old mobile but it is normally turned off.
  • Most of the new savings accounts with higher interest rates say you have to have a mobile number. This limits my choices.
  • Often the need for a number is only on the intial set up. With Atom for instance once set up you can do everything on the app via the Wifi in your home. Might need the walk to the nearest hill just to get the initial sms but then that's it.
