Check to see if it's not muted in Sound Properties: Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Volume tab. Click on the Advanced button & check that everything's OK there too. Lower down on the same tab, also check Speaker settings > Speaker Volume. Check the same in any other sound software (Realtek?) you have.
When you look in Device Manager, are there any problems under 'Sound, video and game controllers'?
When did this happen? Was it recent? Did you install anything new recently? If it's new, & the above didn't help, a System Restore to a day when it was working may cure it.
If no joy eventually, reinstall your sound drivers & reboot. G0 -

Did you try the other steps I suggested? Were all the settings OK? Were there any 'exclamations' in Device Manager?
It's not about having the latest drivers - an older one may work fine too. I was thinking along the lines that the present drivers may have gotten corrupted. It happens to me every time I update my graphics drivers - yep, the sound goes! And I have to reinstall my sound drivers to get it working. Strangely, a System Restore doesn't work! G0 -

Can you hear system sounds at all? If yes, check that the program you're using to play sounds, e.g. Windows Media Player isn't muted.
Ah you have Vista - sorry, I assumed it was XP. I don't have a Vista PC so you'll have to bear with me....
For the 'muted' sound settings I was referring to in my other posts, check in Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Manage Audio Devices. If you make any changes, you may have to reboot & check to see if the problem persists.
If all settings are OK but it still doesn't work, download & install these High Definition Audio drivers.

Many seem to have problems with System Restore in Vista. G0
