Advice needed - upgrading gas/electrics to power outbuilding

  • Hi Niv, I think that will be my plan as long as I can get a sufficient flow rate from it.
  • Electric showers normally have no problem with pressure or flow rate if fed from mains water, at pressure, providing you buy one that is high enough in electrical power to cope with the flow you desire. Read the specs.
Ensure the water pipe, that presumably feeds the shower, wc, basin etc. is of sufficient diameter that the flow is not reduced significantly when two or more are in use at the same time.

    Thank you Sir.

The more I look into this, the more my head continues to spin.

I have exhausted the gas route, and have ruled it out on cost. Estimates were approx £4k for the upgrade to a U16 connection alone

I had ruled out an air to air heat pump solution based on some less than positive reviews on the web, mostly from people in Scotland having them fitted and complaining about performance in cold weather and huge running costs. However, I have a number of friends in Scandinavia who use this exact method to heat their homes without issue, so something doesnt quite stack up. An inquiry to a local air to air heat pump solution supplier saw them recommend heating via air con using a Daikin system.

Up front costs of a Daikin air con multi split system would be less than gas and I would hope ongoing costs would be comparible to gas, plus the benefit of a potential for government subsidy. More importantly I have been given the impression that I can expect a room to heat more quickly this way than using a traditional wet radiator system with the added benefit of cooling in Summer.

The cheapest up front option would appear to be a heat only electric boiler and a wet CH system, with an unvented hot water cylinder. Ive estimated what I think our usage would be and it would equate to approx £250 a year at current rates. The company who recommended the air con solution thought the electric boiler would have to work hard to provide heat via wet CH and result in higher costs than I estimated.

Im struggling to estimate how much electricity an air con heating system would need. Im estimating the install cost of this would be about £2,800 more than the electric boiler and wet system. Am I mad to even think about air con heating as a solution to our needs?

Have you considered Dimplex Quantum storage heaters?

They keep the chill off most of the day, but you can quickly warm up the room by running the fan.

Probably building construction: Scandinavian homes have been very well insulated and draught-proofed for decades whereas we are still catching up. Though as mentioned, your new-build should score well.
