  • Don't know why but none of the suggested alternatives, even the post office, were acceptable.
From a dim, distant memory I thought of a notary public.
Found one off their association web site, local to me, who is also a solicitor, and he is doing it for us at £60 per person but a small discount of £20 off the total price if all 3 go at the same time.

You need to email or call some local solicitors and ask who will do it.

A local firm (South East) agreed to do it for £5 per document and we then provided this to our solicitors in the North-West.

Not always needed. Certain post offices off a certification service usually the big ones. I've never had any issues with using post office certified documents ever, and most of my business that I transact is non face to face.

I've certainly worked for firms (including my current one) who don't include POs in their list of acceptable certifiers.
Think about it - they can do passport checking service
That's quite a different thing - merely somebody taking an educated look through your application to see if you appear to have filled in the form correctly. They don't have any special powers to e.g. certify your photo as being a true likeness (unless they happen to have known you personally for the requisite time).

I used a lawyer from organisation I work for here, no cost. When I was in U.K. charged £5 per document by local solicitor.
