I use 12kg bags get from B&M's or home Bargains. I get peanuts and sun flower seeds, small suet pellets from either. Fat balls I get 150 for £7.99 at B&M's not all stores sell that size usually its 50 in a tub. the 150 come in cardboard box so not plastic. I have around 15 feeders now I made some larger suet feeders so I can out around 10 in, made them with metal galvanised mesh and old bottom of a pot noodle that goes in the mesh with a plastic lid from snack tin to keep rain off, the pot noddle bottom acts as a way to stop lid from blowing off. Tide with garden wire to hang up I use stainless steel hooks to hook in various places. I get loads of birds usually when I aint around I top up all, the suet balls are quickest to go0

Likewise, B&M for sunflower hearts and fat balls; great value.0 -

Thank you for this thread!
I put out sunflower seeds still in their jackets (temporarily forgotten correct term!). Is it better if I swap to hearts? They seem to go, although obviously with the mess left.
Thanks.:hello:0 -
Not too sure ally1974 as we only got our sunflower hearts at the beginning of this week. I can however confirm they are a firm favourite with all sorts of bird in the garden0

I think husks is the correct term. Those in black striped husks are seeds, those with husks removed are hearts. The difference is the birds they attract, some birds don't have beaks strong enough to crack the husks.0 -
Can I also add I cant believe how many gold finches the niger/nyjer (unsure of spelling or correct pronounciation) seeds attract. They take an age to go down in the feeder due to the seeds size, but when we get visitors we have 6 or 7 goldfinches for a couple of hours, they're a beautiful addition to the garden0
