neighbours cctv facing towards backgarden

Options
So my neighbor is really weird they’ve got electric gates and two CCTV cameras on their front drive. Not a problem but it’s their CCTV camera in the back garden that’s the problem. It’s facing his back doors and windows but because it’s placed high up and that’s where the problem is.

We’re not sure if it’s picking up in our garden or not, we don’t like each other, we say hello if we see each other but if we can avoid each other we can, there doesn’t seem any point in asking if it does because I don’t think they’re going to admit if it is picking up in our garden.

Other than getting the police involved which ultimately we don’t want to do, as it’s commin sense that they’ve already got better things to do. What else can we do, or where does the law stand

Ask to see the picture. It's all you can do.

There is guidance about domestic CCTV (check on gov.uk) but if you're not talking to them to find out exactly what it does pick up and not wanting to go down the police/harassment route it's hard to see how you're going to a) find out and b) enforce it if there is an issue.

Tell the neighbor that you suspect someone has been in your garden and could they help with footage of their CCTV.

Put up some bird boxes with ever so slightly obvious trailing leads in suitable places in your garden, and then await developments?

After all, maybe none of their cameras is real.

Just because a camera looks like it is recording someone else's property doesn't always mean it does I have cctv and you can blank areas out and I do so I dont record peoples properties other than a very small area that wont get foot traffic. I am always happy to show anyone if they have any doubts not that I have. But I did recently help a neighbour prove a recovery truck did damage there car when taking it up the vehicles ramp as the winch broke

If it is clearly in sight and is pointing towards their back door it is probably innocent enough.

I would worry about the ones which are hidden!

Does it really worry you? What are you doing there?

  • I have CCTV and it's surprising how much extra it actually captures. Ours covers our house, drive, and the road, and a pathway in/out of the estate, and I'm amazed by the number of times other residents or police have asked me if it's captured certain events on it. Neither of them have been bothered with its viewing angle.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's unlikely they are watching it. They're more likely to watch you out of their window anyway...

Technically if it is recording public areas then the onus is on you to make sure you are GDPR/DPA compliant. I've never heard of anyone being challenged on it, but private CCTV is no longer exempt from this (changed a few years ago).

Thing is ... if you wander into the garden in your pants ... lift a leg, f4rt ... burp... then slouch back indoors... if they were watching from the window it's "their story" ... if it's on video it's on YouTube.
