Just day to day activity really? Salary, utility expenses etc. mostly. Now that you've mentioned, a few months ago my brother came to UK to study from abroad and my dad did send his tuition fees to my account which I paid to the university immediately - is that a red flag somehow?

    Yes

    It's called "money laundering".

That does sound scary, but having said that it was all through proper channel, personal bank to bank transfer!

Is there any way to check if I've been flagged up for that? Is that something which falls under CIFAS/National Hunter domain and a SAR to them should reveal that?

My sons father has posted me his university fees which is a LOT on 2 different occasions, it’s never caused me any problems so I wouldn’t be overly concerned it’s that but worth you ruling it out.

You can't rule anything out as the banks won't tell you what caused the decline. They're not obliged to.

I've sent a SAR to CIFAS, National Hunter and SIRA. Let's see what they have!

Well yes, that was back in 2016-17 though. Have had some major financial events since then without an issue including taking on a new mortgage..
  • That might be your issue right there, if somebody you have traded (quite innocently with) has been found to be money laundering they may have run a trace back to who they have traded with in the past. Could’ve been 2, 3 or 10 years ago and you may have been marked up as having an association with said person. Might not be but it’s worth taking into consideration.
  • As Monzo did reinstate your accounts though there may have been a flag that when they looked into was seen to be a mistake, maybe starling bank have not been updated. Is it worth giving Starling a call and explain what happened with Monzo and ask if they can look into it?
