EON Electricity - Massive bill hike

I am currently with EON in a 2 bedroom flat. We don't have any items or equipment that particularly uses a lot of electricity. We only have two TVs, a washing machine, a dishwasher (maybe used twice per month) and electric heating. We moved in about August 2018.
My direct debit was set at £51 per month by direct debit. TODAY - my direct debit has been hiked to a massive £160.00 per month!
I've contacted EON to ask why it's so high, and they've said we've used more than expected and agreed to lower it to £141.00 per month (spread across 48 months). I provided them with an up to date meter reading as well (they then increased it further).
Does anyone have any advice? This is an enormous bill increase when we only have a small flat. We've had the heating on quite a bit during the winter period (it's been very cold) - but still... this is a huge price hike for us to be able to afford!

E.On are correct, you have been using more than your original estimate. Submit meter readings monthly in future and you will not get bill shock. £51 per month was a ridiculously low DD amount, the supplier can only guess what you are likely to use and set the DD accordingly but submitting regular reads would have helped them correct this more quickly.0

I suspect that you have not been taking and submitting monthly meter readings. If you did you would get a regular update on your consumption, and what it was costing. It is the electric heating that will have raised your monthly costs, and only when spring and summer arrive will you get your account back into balance.
You will also then know your annual consumption in kWh, so will be able to have a much better forecast for your energy costs next year. If you also have electric hot water heating, see that you have the settings right to keep your consumption down.0 -

These two statements don't go together - electric heating means bills.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
If an electric appliance either heats or turns something, it is not cheap to run.0

Hello SaveMoney1 and welcome to the Forums.
Already some great advice on here - thanks all. As has been said, it looks like the original payments weren't covering your usage and you've received a catch-up bill now we've accurate meter readings. Totally understand, these can come as a shock. We're happy to take a customer's own readings and provide several ways to send them. These include online via our website, phone app or Live Chat service; by phone or text, email or letter.
If you've registered with our website, you can create your own bills by popping in readings and choosing 'request a bill.' It's a great way to keep on top of how much energy you're using and avoid the shock of a catch-up bill.
Electric heating can be expensive particularly if the water is heated that way too. If you've an electric immersion heater, make sure you don't leave it on longer than needed. I've come across quite a few cases where customers have left it on 24/7 and run up large bills.
I'm glad we've been able to agree a payment arrangement to spread the balance over a longer period. We usually spread balances over a maximum of 12 months so well done in agreeing a 48 month period.
When you've a minute, have a look at the energy saving section on our website. Some great tips to help you save money by saving energy.
Hope this goes some way to explaining why you've had a large bill SaveMoney1. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.
