Npower - Erroneous Transfer
Hi,
I am looking for some guidance.
For over 20 years I have been with Npower and paid my dual fuel through direct debit.
Back in August I had an email advising " Sorry you are leaving us " and cancelling my account and direct debit.
As this was confusing I contacted them and was told my utilities have been transferred to Scottish Power. I had no idea what this was about and so after many phone calls to Npower and Scottish Power I was told it was an erroneous transfer. So basically someone who lived in my house at least 12 years ago ( as I have lived there since 2007 ) had an account with Scottish Power and must have had my address on the account.
So it took several months for Npower to sort this out but at the time I asked them to ensure I was on the tariff before they cancelled my account and also I want to pay the same what I paid every month ( approx £140 ).
Over the last 3 months they have only been taking £64 per month ( even though I have been providing meter readings ) and calling them to ask why with no answers.
Then i receive an email advising I owe £585 and my payments will go up to £258 per month.
It also turns out they put me on a standard tariff when my account was opened again.
So even though I haven't instigated any change of supplier I am left with a huge bill and increase in payments.
Is there anything I can do for them to take any responsibility for any of this ? I don't see why I should pay for their mistakes.
Thanks

Where an erroneous transfer has occurred, the customer will be put back into the same position they would have been in had the erroneous transfer not have occurred.
So presumably your old taiff expired and you didn't choose a new one.
Also, presumably you have not been providing regular monthly meter readings, resulting in a huge catch up bill, and monthly payments adjusted accordingly to pay it.
It wasn't a problem though for you when they lowewred your monthly payment to less than 50% of what you were used to?
Use what you were not paying nPower to part settle what is now owed.0 -
I was told I would be put back on my previous tariff. This didn't happen. I also informed them every month of meter readings and questioned the low payments. It took them 6 months to sort it. Also should the amount owed not be against the tariff I should have been on rather than a standard tariff ?0
