I switched December 2017 Gas and Electric to Together Energy, they took over my neighbours gas supply it took months to sort out. In the mean time my previous gas supplier upped my contract to standard rate I did not try to get compensation for the difference in price in contracts
I switched in December 2018 to Green Network Energy, I received an email from them last week they have taken over my neighbours gas supply their excuse being '
The incorrect switch happened because the national database had very similar addresses for both meter points therefore when the switch took place the wrong meter point had been selected by yourself or the switching company.'. I did not supply the meter number
I can admit that I am partly to blame for not checking my correspondence/e-mails/diret debits
Both of these switches were done through the MSE big switch
How can I prevent this happening again?

I assume perhaps contact the 'national database' to ask if there is anything that can be done to make the addresses more difficult to confuse.
The fact it has happened twice with two different suppliers suggests there is indeed an issue with how the addresses are recorded.0 -
The MPRN -( Meter Point Reference Number ). is not the same as the number on the Gas meter
The MPRN is issued as the Gas supply is installed in the property and stays the same for as long as the Gas supply and the property exist.
Gas meters are numbered by the maker and will change whenever the meter is changed - To a Smart mter for example
The MPRN is the key information a new supplier for gas needs to identify the service address and it is printed on all the bills - Usually at the bottom of a page in the R/hand corner - Your Elec bills show your ESN,( Electricity Supply Number)
From your post it seems that neither Together or Green energy asked for your MPRN and just relied on the postal address, which is why there was a problem
With erroneous transfers, the rule is that the customer should be passed back to the original supplier and not financially dis-advantaged0 -
I was never asked for my MPRN, they managed to switch the electric supply correctly. The problem is that I was left with the original supplier at the higher standard rate as I was at the end of a fixed rate contract, my neighbours supply was taken over. The postal addresses are very similar I am xyz farm next door is old xyz farm. I have switched lots of times previous to this and never had a problem.0
