Re-decorating wooden staircase

Options
Hi,

I have a pine staircase, including large wooden pannel area to the side of the stair case, rails and handrail. All of which has been varnished with something and it is all looking really orange/patchy/tired.

I would really like to varnish or stain the entire area to get rid of the orange and end up with a nice wood finish.

I literately have no idea how to go about this? I don't know what prep i need to do. Do i need to sand all tje wood down/ with what stength grit sandpaper? Then should i use a stain or a vanish?

Is anyone able to advise a very lost DIYer?

Depending what is already on the surface stain may be useless without preparation.

is the colour from the wood or the coating

a couple of pics might help identify what you have.
