£500 boiler repairs

  • If it's the standard filling loop with a removable braided hose, that's a very simple plumbing job. Just buy another one and replace. You don't even to remove the old olives and nuts on the pipes. Just some PTFE tape wound over the olive and job done.

    Obviously isolate water etc!

I don't think it's the actual loop that's the problem, rather it's the way that it's plumbed in - it's been done with a self cutting isolating valve, and that valve isn't letting the water in.
  • I'd be looking at the fan rather than the gas valve
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

If you are determined to go the repair route, surely it would be best to arrange for a plumber to be there when it first fires up in the morning. Then he will hear the exact noise you are getting.

Obviously change the timer to suit the plumbers arrival, or turn the timer off and let him/her fire it up themselves. (Are there female plumbers nowadays? - can't see why there shouldn't be).

Giving a plumber free range to replace parts when they've not heard the actual noise is a surefire way to waste money. They won't 'unchange' the part - they'll just suggest changing another.

I agree with others - once a repair bill get near to half of what a new boiler would cost, it's best to replace the boiler. (And there's no guarantee that you spending approx £500 would actually fix your boiler problem).
