Universal credit and self employment

Hi everyone!
I posted on here the other day for help with universal credit and got some helpful replies so thought I would try with a separate query. In 2017 I rang carers allowance to inform them that I was self employed but they said they didn’t need to take any details if I didn’t expect to be earning over £116 per week (which I didn’t think I would anywhere near earn not for the first year) which I though was strange so anyway I didn’t earn anything for the first say 5 months then my business rocketed over Christmas and in just over a 2 month period I earned just under £3000, after this I stopped my business due to my health and also took a couple of months break from claiming carers. I rang carers allowance back and told them that I had rang to declare my self employment previously but didn’t need to give details but now I had earned a fair bit more than expected in the space of a couple of months so would I owe them money for that period or what and she really didn’t seem interested she just said oh that’s fine once you have done your tax return and have your final accounts ring back with the details but it should be fine as we can average your earnings out over the year plus take off expenses. I have just recently filed my 2017/2018 tax return at the end of jan so will ring carers allowance as soon as I get chance next week to give them my figures. But does this seem right? When You ring to inform them of employment/self employment Shouldnt they have taken down at least some details even if you are earning under the allowed limit? Or if you are self employed ask to see monthly incoming/outgoings? and rather than me just ringing up to give them the details of my accounts shouldn’t they be sending me some sort of form to fill in? Does anyone have any experience with this? Any help appreciated, thank you in advance.

When you claimed you said you would be earning below the threshold so they didn’t need any more details. For self employment they are likely to average the earnings over a year so if your business has gone well you may have been overpaid Carer’s Allowance if your profit for the year are more than about £6000.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Your subject title says Universal Credit.

Are you claiming this or intend to claim it ?
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • My overall profit for the year was just under £3000, as I said after the unexpected good couple of month in which I received the £3000 I had to close down my business due to health, I just thought they may have documented it that I was self employed, and I have seen posts on here that say people who are self employed get forms sent to them yearly to complete but they told me just to ring up with the figures there was no mention of a form.
  • Sorry no it’s not about universal credit, that was a mistake I was supposed to put carers allowance and self employment and now I don’t know how to change it

I think some of the DWP operations are outsourced. Espesh the telephone centres. I am not sure the one you called is. Having said that often you have to call several times to get someone who knows what they are talking about.
