Family Member owing money

  • You know what I've been thinking about this thread and can see both sides. I can see how hurt and upset I would be if I had helped someone I cared about and they let me down so spectacularly.

I also can see how if it is as a lot of the posters have interpreted - a person really in a lot of trouble desperately trying to not drown and with the best intentions borrowing more than they could realistically afford and it all coming crashing down. If that is the case then it is a tragic situation and I would encourage you, if you can, to work through the anger to over time move to a better place. I know when I didn't have enough money to survive it would be easier to avoid someone I owed money to until I could afford to repay them than having the face feeling I had let someone down and I was a failure. Avoidance is common when we are overwhelmed.

I also feel only you know this person. Some people are out for themselves and will take advantage of people's good nature's. If this is the case then chalk it up, move on, and know the nature of the people around you so this doesn't happen in future
