Insurance for a day - help needed

Options
I'm trying to find out a way to insure a car in my name just so I can pick it up.

The story being, my ex hubby rang me yesterday as he had been stop by the police for driving while disqualified, apparently he was banned in court last week for drink driving. Says he didn't realise the ban was effective immediately (yeah alright, but that's another story). Anyway, where they pulled him over was a double yellow and as he was to be carted off to the police station they said he couldn't leave the car there so it had to be impounded. It's now at the local impound yard at already £160 a day plus £12 a day to be released.

To pick up the car he has to go with someone who has a valid insurance certificate for the car and apparently they said he couldn't use his as his would no longer count anymore. Not sure if that's true or not, could I not just add my name to his as a named driver or is there anyway I can get insurance for a day or two to just pick it up.

Thanks

  • You're in luck. I was only looking for car insurance for the wife yesterday and came across this http://www.norwichunion.com/short-term-insurance/ If you google 'temp car insurance' you'll find aplenty, though Norwich Union was the only one I recognised.

  • Oh, word of warning: if you do get immediate temp cover, the police might not accept the cover note if it's been downloaded off the 'net - far too easy to change them. I know DVLA & Post Office will not accept them. Best check first or go to a local broker if you need it ASAP.

  • Word of warning, you cannot insure a car that doesn't belong to you.

Your ONLY option is to either get the vehicle towed or to get added to his policy as a named driver for the day, depending on whether they'll keep the policy running as technically he can't drive anyway.
  • Thanks all. Managed to get it done through the NU. Been to the police station now and got the authorisation to pick up the car.

I also thought the car maybe had to be in my name but on the NU policy it asks why you want the short term policy and their were numerous reasons it gave, one of them being to drive a friend or relatives car, so it didn't have to be in my name.

    Once again thanks.
