Basically long story short, thanks to the old owners of my property, I discovered someone has been using my name/address for credit!

Long story short - I moved into my house 12 months ago. The previous tenant text me this week to ask if any post had come for her, as her partner's identity had been used for credit applications. (I didn't know his name so I'd been returning letters, oops)

It made me curious as I have had several parcels go missing (so many that I insisted if I wasn''t home that any parcels be returned to depot or left next door) so I checked my credit report and OMG, dozens of applications made! I had bad credit anyway so only 1 application was successful - checked again today with experian, more results come up and a credit card has been opened and used!!!

I contacted the catalogue who point blank refused to help me as they say the items were delivered to MY address! (they bloody werent!). The credit card was cancelled as the company said it was ''suspicious activity" but has a small balance.

I'm finding the whole thing very stressful - I know I need to report this to the police but they're hardly likely to trawl shops/ATM cctv for proof are they, so now I'm stuck!

I'm also confused - whoever did it got my date of birth wrong by day, month and year (more than a decade wrong!) so the companies are reluctant to speak with me.

I asked if they logged IPs and they said if my internet is open (it was, it's not now) then IP wouldn't help.

The previous tenant managed to get statements of the "delivered" things - yet the catalogue in my name refuses to do this! (Incidentally the delivered things are just generic crap like clothes and a baby monitor, so at least they know its not me as my kids are older and I don''t have a baby :rotfl: )

I've learned my lesson big time. But now im worried im going to have police knocking at my door for this "fraud" over the accounts in the previous tenant's name? I find it all a bit worrying, though thankfully (?) my credit rating was already shot (I was in an abusive marriage, my late husband racked up debt in my name and his, then when I tried to leave he reported ME to action fraud, who saw it was nonsense and closed the case. I then left him after he was violent to our kids and he took his life, truly awful) so it hasn't damaged my rating any further, though I have no idea if it has for the previous tenant!

I dont know the previous tenant, only his girlfriend whom I met when I bought the house, no reason to suspect she's involved.

Report it to Action Fraud and provide those details to the catalogue.

You don't need to solve the case, so don't worry about what the police may or may not do.

Just get it reported to the police, do it via Action Fraud as suggested. It wont cost anything to do.

Your credit rating is only seen by yourself, lenders see your history.
  • So items are meant to be delivered to your house but you didn’t get them? Sounds like courier fraud to me

My brother had this happen - a new tenant used his name and address (wrong dob) to set up a very account. He only found out when he started getting statements as apparently the tenant had instructed the driver to leave parcels outside!!! Very were good and cancelled it straight away, after he gave an action fraud reference, police weren’t interested as nothing can be proved
