Ah, sorry - I misread "they didn't even need to do a forced regen".

Perhaps they simply got the car hot enough to regen itself automatically.
Perhaps Halfords did fake the emissions. But since somebody else has worked on the car, you can no longer appeal the test.

I don't that your link stops the OP from appealing the test on the basis of the OP having had anoher MOT test elsewhere which contradicted Halfords view
At the least Halfords might get a visit

Also DVSA uses the words "should not " (advice) which is not the same as "must not" (Prohibition.)

It's the surprise that gets you - not being prepared for what you were told, or prepared for how to fund it.

Stating the obvious, but not all Halfords or Kwikfit are terrible...
Some are okay, but caveat emptor - expect them to try to upsell (and be pleasantly surprised if they don't, or if they softball) and be aware of the state of your car.

With most modern cars with alloy wheels you can see your discs and pads easily enough, the most cursory glance is enough for forewarned is forearmed - if you know there's meat on the pads and they tell you they're bordering on dangerous then you know how far to run.

But everyone else is 100% right, a decent local garage is a much better bet... Even independent specialists for most car manufacturers will be better priced for most work than chain garages and main dealers, and they'll know your car very well too.

Not all local garages do tyres themselves, some take them to chains (atleast one of my local garages gets the tyres done at local ATS), but they're not going to get hoodwinked by upsold maintenance...

Find a local garage you can trust, budget some savings in advance for repairs and do you own minor checks as much as possible - you won't ever be so surprised, or upset, again.

Still you usual helpful self then...
Have I been unhelpful usually then? Please explain.

I have noticed a large number of new posts lately from new members/first post with some highly unlikely scenario related; just seems suspicious that's all. Like DarkMatter all over again

Some are just "bad", a few are even relatively "okay".

Let's not be hyperbolic just for the hell of it...

My Jeep's DPF has regenerated the last 3 years during the MOT and it gets a good mix of long and short journeys.

I havent read all the posts however all you have to do is threaten Halfords with false representing to the DVLA in respect of MOT and put it in writing along with written confirmation from the other garage that the DPF was fine when they tested it. £700 for discs and pads is nothing short of obscene. However i know of someone who was quoted £900 to fit new pads and discs all round to Audi A5 which they said were 80 percent worn yet when they took it to a Audi dealer yet when looked at by independant they werent even 25% worn and nothing wrong whatsoever with discs the car was only 2 years old and had 40k miles on it.

then they are just revving it a regen in a workshop is dangerous and you must keep clear of the exhaust because of the amount of heat generated

Unless the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) retest the vehicle, we don't know which test was correct.
