...............i'm sure £316 in credit must stand for something!

No it won't - the suppliers do not have special tariffs for existing customers.

As per Wavelets comments please explain the figures.

The "credit" figure can be misleading.

According to my supplier (Flow) I'm in credit by £30 with a DD due next week. However the £30 is not an instant figure and takes no account of my consumption in Jan (£82) nor my consumption to date in Feb (£32) ie by my cals as of today that credit of £30 is actually a debit of £84.

For those suppliers who only bill quarterley of even 6 monthly or annually the online credit can be very misleading. Does Edf bill you monthly, quarterly ............... ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

OK - Your "National Average" consumption by EDF is actually 3,300 Kwh of Elec and 12,000 of Gas consumed a year, and like all Average figures applied to multiple markets, it's rubbish when applied to one particular consumer.

You know what your start meter readings were and what the meters read now - Do the maths to calculate your Kwh useage of both fuels today, then double the figures for the numbers you will use in a year and use them on the comparison sites - Because you have had little Summer use the figures will be an overstatement of your Gas.

Understand that a Credit Balance stated on EDF's website is only accurate on the date of issue on the last bill.
Payments made after that date will be shown as credit, but will be eaten up by the next bill.

When exploring the comparison sites, search for 'Gas only' prices and then' Elec only' prices - buying them from different suppliers can give very worthwhile savings
  • When was the last invoice you received from EDF? As example, say it was 15 November, 2018. Let's say that on this invoice it shows a CREDIT balance of £30.00

Let's say that you pay a Direct Debit of £100 a month on the 1st of each month - so 1 Dec, 1 Jan and 1 Feb.

    This would give you a credit on account of £330 (3 x £100 + £30 from your 15 Nov '18 invoice).

In this case, you would be in credit only because EDF have not given you an up to date invoice.

So if you let us know when was your last invoice, it may be as simple as - you have not been invoiced yet for the energy used, in my example for about 3 months - and in that case - you will find that you probably owe them a bit. HTH

OP, you haven't actually told us what EDF tariff you are on? If it's SVT, the default one, that is the most expensive-but there will be no exit fees.
Forget the monthly DD level, the only figure that matters is the annual total, which any comp site will tell you with 2 minutes work.
The level of your debit is immaterial, you will get back any credit due after final billing.
