Warranties

Options
Hi, we recently bought a home with a newly installed bathroom and kitchen, both covered by a warranty. There has been some issues with said bathroom and kitchen. I have emailed B&Q who have said we have no rights under the warranty as we didn't buy the bathroom and we need to get the Account Holder to contact them directly. How are we meant to go about this as we bought the home through agents and solicitors? I have no way of asking them to transfer into our names or anything like. The bathroom should have 10 year warranty.

  • If the terms of the B&Q warranty state that it is only the original purchaser that can make a claim, this is perfectly legal and acceptable.
When you bought the house did any of the paperwork specifically state that the warranty was transferrable to you?

What you might have to do is to write a letter to the previous owners explaining the situation asking if they would contact B&Q about a possible transfer of the warranty and give this to the solicitor or estate agent you used and see if they will forward it for you.
  • No, there is nowhere on the B&Q Warranty that states this. I will have to check our documents. I will try that thank you. The bathroom is only 12 months and the kitchen less so. I assumed the warranty was on the actual bsthroom/kitchen and it's location I.e. our house. For example if I buy a car under manufacturers warranty the warranty lies with the car not the person who owns it.
  • The only stipulation outlined is 'The guarantee is non transferable to a new owner, when it has been removed from the premises it was initially installed in; which it hasn't

    it also says
All claims must be supported with the original receipt or other reasonable proof of purchase

    do you have that ?

  • I believe we may have the invoice or goods received note. The owner left most of the forms and documentation with us. I suppose we could try go through our solicitor but the purchase finalised 2 months ago.
  • I assumed the warranty was on the actual bathroom. It has a 10 year warranty and it's particularly common that people sell houses prior to this 10 year period completing. The conditions don't state anything about it not being transferable. I therefore thought it would be passed to the next owner of the property who wouldn't have reasonable proof of receipt
