BT Diverse 6350 Corded telephone 2006

A relative in his 80's has the above corded 'phone and it keeps flashing that there is a new message.
I have tried everything to remove the flashing icon but it keeps saying there are no messages to delete.
It is an old 'phone but my relative is familiar with it. Does anyone have any idea how to remove this message notification, please? I have tried checking the User Guide but have not been able to find the answer - only how to delete messages or calls if they are there.
If the 'phone is faulty, with age, maybe a new one is needed, thank you.
