Good luck booking/paying for car hire using a debit card. Most car hire companies T&Cs now state Credit card only.

Really? Avis and Hertz - 2 of the world's biggest car rental companies - accept debit cards in many locations:

Hmm, its not that clear cut; line 3 of the hertz link says this " * If you made your booking with a debit card, you will need to present the debit card and, depending on the vehicle group, one or more credit cards when picking up the vehicle."

and the Avis link states "We recommend taking your credit card, because some countries don’t accept debit cards. If they do, only Visa (except Electron) and MasterCard debit cards are suitable.

You can’t use a debit card to hire a vehicle in Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Iceland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Canada. You can only use a credit card to hire a vehicle in these countries "

  • I work for a major car rental company so can advise our rules on this.

If you wish to book a car without CDW you would need to generally use a US or Canadian website to do so. As otherwise it generally is included.

To have the contract without CDW to decline this, you must pay with a credit card that covers the CDW. It must also state a value amount it covers you for.

To be honest the chances of you getting the car with CDW on curve card would be slim to none.
  • I used my Curve card at Enterprise. In England.

Locked it when they wanted to take the grand excess off me (let my insurance sort it out instead)

So it certainly could be done. Whether they’ve tightened up a bit no idea. I had collections threatening me and I could never hire from Enterprise again blah blah blah, even though the bill was settled in full once my insurance company got round to it
  • Enterprise are the more flexible ones, and when it’s done through your insurer they have a lot more flexibility, also none of their counter staff are on commission, so they are not really fussed to argue
