Cancelled home insurance but money debited and no refund

Hi all,
I got home insurance with Halifax in January 2018 and paid one annual payment. As it came to an end in January 2019 I wasn’t sure of the process so decided to be on the safe side and phone them to tell them I wouldn’t be renewing and would be buying elsewhere. They said no problem, the insurance would end on my renewal date and I didn’t need to do anything further.
I also had emergency home cover with Halifax, which is underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance. After my renewal date passed my emergency home cover cost of£40 was debited from my account. I contacted Halifax who said nothing to do with them and I need to contact RSA, which I did. They said I should have been advised to contact them by Halifax if I wasn’t renewing my policy and they said they will cancel it and refund me within 5-7 days. That time has passed and still no refund. What should I do now?

Whenever you are not happy with your insurance company the route to go down is a complaint in line with their complaints procedure
Then if you are not happy with the reply or they ignore you for 8 weeks you can escalate to the FOS for their adjudication at no cost to you0 -
Who would I be complaining about? Halifax or RSA?
Thanks0 -
I would contact RSA and chase the refund...0

Is it worth contacting my bank and asking them to refund me under the terms of the direct debit guarantee? Would this affect my credit score?0

Using the dd guarantee won't affect your credit status.
(It might be if it turned out you did owe the money and refuse to pay the merchant, resulting in them having to pursue you to reimburse them the money you got back via the DD Guarantee)0 -
All sorted RSA have refunded me.0
