Engine Choice

I'd go with petrol all the way.
My friend has a diesel Galaxy and the fact that they're trying way too hard to cut emissions mean there's so many unnecessary extras in the engine, these things are always malfunctioning, just a nightmare.0 -
Most diesels are fine as long as you're using them suitably and keep them well serviced.
If you're not likely to be getting the engine up to temp for prolonged periods (30+ mile motorway runs regularly, ideally) then don't go there, forced regens will happen more often and will hurt the fuel economy so you'd never see headline figures... And shouldn't buy diesel.
If you know you're someone than skimps on servicing and should get it in more often than you do (plenty of drivers like this about!) then you're going to be more likely to face issues.
It seems silly to say that diesels are sensitive to neglect, but they're particularly so - all cars last longer with proper care, but diesels especially so.0 -
The 1.2 TCe is the same engine as the 1.2 Dig-T in Nissans and they've suffered from some pretty bad problems, particularly bore/piston problems and timing chains, you need to read up on them before committing.
The new 1.3 is it's replacement and is obviously an unknown quantity at the moment.
You'd hope the new NMRP bore coating solves the bore/piston trouble they had with the 1.2, but we've seen these bore coating before, Jaguar had major trouble with their version.0 -
Dont buy a diesel unless you do over 30,000 miles a year
they cost more to buy than a petrol, more to service and more to fix when they go wrong plus diesel is 10p/ltr more than derv0 -

Thanks for this - that seemed like a horrendous batch of faults... I hope they don't follow through to the 1.3 - I'd like to think they have been careful!0
