Default- April 2013- DESPERATE ADVICE NEEDED

Options
Hi all,

I was hoping for a bit of advice.

It's with regards to a mobile phone contract I had with Vodafone in 2013. Unfortunately, I defaulted on that account for several months on 01/04/2013. I had lost my job and was in complete denial in owning up to my debts. I since paid the outstanding balance several months later when I got back into work in 2013 but this has damaged my credit score.

The default summary is due to come off my credit report in 4 months time as this would be 6 years since the date of default, however I am desperate for this default to be removed now. It is such a small amount I defaulted on nearly 6 years ago and it has had a severe impact on my financial life. I have since become much more mature with managing my accounts and turned over a new financial leaf, I’m in fact looking to buy my first house this year in August with my partner and he and I want to ensure my Credit Score is as best as it can be so we're excepted for a mortgage.

Has anyone experienced any gestures of goodwill from Vodafone with similar things? Could Vodafone remove the default and help me get closer to my goal of buying my first house. I tried to contact the customer service Centre which was overseas but they refused to help and advised nothing can be done :(

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you :j

  • It's highly unlikely that it will be removed now.

However, fortunately your credit score isn't a real number. It's not used or seen by anyone, so can be safely ignored. A 5.5 year old default shouldn't cause an issue if you have managed your accounts well since then, and the default is settled.

Use a broker to make sure your application is placed correctly.
  • I can’t really help you regarding this but am also interested in your responses. I have a £17 default from Vodafone. Believe they are renowned for this sort of action. Mine is due to come of this year.

What action - accurately reporting that people don't pay what they've agreed to?
"Facism arrives as your friend. It will restore your honour, make you feel proud, protect your house, give you a job, clean up the neighbourhood, remind you of how great you once were, clear out the venal and the corrupt, remove anything you feel is unlike you... [it] doesn't walk in saying, "our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution."
  • They won’t remove it as it’s an accurate representation of what happened.

Surely if you want to buy a house in August, just wait until the default drops off to apply for the mortgage?

Get a broker who knows what they are doing. Telecoms issues are so common that some mortgage lenders will ignore them. Try posting in the mortgage forum, there are a few brokers who post there and may advise.

You have lots of other things to work on - concentrate on the things you can control, not the one you can't.

Make sure you're on the electoral roll, save as much as possible, don't use an overdraft, pay all your bills on time, check your credit files and address any anomalies on them

How dare they accurately report what happened on a factual basis. Next time just pay the £17, really wasn't worth withholding payment in hindsight was it?

  • I had a default in April 2013 which will leave my credit file in a couple of months. However, I applied for a high street mortgage in December 2018 and was accepted with no problems - it didn't even go to an underwriter. I did go through a broker, so would recommend this. But as you are likely to be applying for a mortgage after the default disappears from your record, I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure your accounts are in good standing for a good 6 months prior to applying and you should be fine :-)
