How can I make my new website show up in search engines?

I have just created a website using Microsoft Office Live. For the sake of argument, lets say it's called www.moneysavingnewbie.com.

When I go to google, and type in the words "money", "saving", and "newbie", I would expect it to show up but it doesn't. It doesn't even come up if I type "moneysavingnewbie", so I'm a little confused.

Can anyone help please?

    Hia - there's a similar question here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=591112

Basically, search engines can't trawl all of the web all of the time, and you have to make some changes to your website in order to get it "noticed".

It's a very studied science, and how quickly you want to get "noticed" will depend on how much you want to spend... otherwise, it's just a matter of waiting.

I've never created a website using Office Live - does it give you an option to add Meta tags (Title, Description, Keywords)? These are the old-fashioned way to get up on the search engines, and are still used today, so a good starting point :-)

  • Also, register your site at dmoz.org

All the major search engines include listings from here (and it's free).
  • It takes a few days or weeks to get a good spot, my site is number 3 on Google for "adult humour" but needs some looking for on other search engines, but I'm very happy with that, even with what looks like a good position, I only get about 50 unigue hits per day.
Check your meta tags, although less used now than they used to be it's always worth adding them, use a desription tag, with all the major words that your target audience will search for, the same goes for your keywords tag, use your site name and again keywords in your main content on the front page, use at least one keyword in bold, make your content use all the keywords you want to be found, it may look or read not quite as you would like (just see mine), but remember the site search engines robots will be reading your text first, and will be logging your keywords.
