Scam on Facebook. Help please.

Options
I was looking on Facebook and there was a post which said, if you were born in March, Morrison's celebrating so many years of business and could win some vouchers, so i clicked on it. You had to open 3 boxes, the last one said £350. Click on the next link and phone this 090 number. There were some supposedly reviews which i read and so thought it was legitimate to Morrison's. Once i was on the phone, i had to answer questions, it was also linked to the page i was on on Facebook, so the questions kept changing as i answered them by clicking the phone digits to answer if that makes sense. It then knocked me off the telephone and then a message came up on the internet page to say that i had hung up when i never. When i looked on my landline phone, i had been on for just over 30 mins. I think that my phone bill is going to be over the £30 mark and i can't afford this as i am on the sick. Please, what can i do about this? Is there anybody out there who can give me some advice please? Thank you for reading even if you can't help me.

You would need to call your phone company and act very upset over how silly you have been. They might waive the charge.

Morrison’s, and Asda, and anyone else, is NEVER going to give away vouchers in that way on Facebook. 100%.
  • Ignore all Facebook things like that, it does not happen. You put your date of birth on Facebook so the ads know when you were born, try changing it, those ads will change.

If you want to win some genuine prizes there is a competition section on these forums.

I would be surprised if your phone company refunded your money on this, but I guess it might be worth a try. Problem is it has been made clear time and time again that 09 numbers are extremely expensive and these days they are normally a rip off too, you really do not get genuine companies using them because there was such outrage around them.

Definitely ignore all "wins" that mean you have to call an 09 number, they are ALWAYS expensive.

And bear in mind that any genuine win does not require you to spend money.

First rule of 'offers' from random people, always check snopes or hoax slayer (other sites are available) before doing anything.

These are all over facebook , several a day pop up, free cruises, giveaway cars, vouchers, goods etc- so obviously a scam.

It's more usually data mining or obtaining live email addresses and adding you to a sucker list- I haven't seen the telephone one before, but then I haven't seen many people actually go ahead with the supposed survery before. this is the usual scam:

As above all you can do is hope for a goodwill payment from your phone provider.

  • Oh thank you so much everybody who has replied. Yes, i was rather silly, but at 63 yrs old, i don't know much about technology or anything that is illegal on the net. I will get in touch with my telephone company and see how it goes.
  • Plus, Facebook don't care about these scam ads - it's all money to them and into Mr Zuckerberg's pockets so they can dodge tax on it.

Age has nothing to do it, you are only a few years older than me !

Facebook don't monitor every single thing that is posted, it's always a good idea if you see these scams posted to just click and report them as spam to Facebook. It might stop someone vulnerable falling for it.
