blu-ray or hd recorder ?

Now I have a panasonic viera 23" all singing/dancing tv, I am pondering over my next move. I am reluctant to reconnect the vhs and dvd boxes because of temptation to get a recordable dvd machine that has a hard drive (for recording). Should it be the conventional type or HD?
BUT, I'm now aware that there are two incompatable formats, blu-ray and HD. Bother will show normal dvd's but the alterate versions.
Like betamax and vhs before, one had to go. So who will win in this latest saga?. Because Sky and virgin transmit in hd, I feel the public will automatically brainwash themselves into "thinking" hd. Do you ?
Does anyone have any views on this, does anyone know of lists of films available in these formats?

Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVd are High Definition, what Sky and Virgin broadcast in is irrelevant really.
Personally I wouldn't buy either at the moment. I'd give it a few months, dual format players have already been launched by LG and if they become popular there won't be a problem.
Also if you have a 23" TV is it actually HD?It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends

I agree with BillScarab, wait for the hybrids to come down in price. This isn't like the days of VHS/Betamax where there had to be an outright winner. This is more like DVD+/-/RAM where we just get used to having multiple formats."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I'm with Billscarab. Already there's dual format players so a dual format writer will be inevitable.
In addition to that, you'll pay the new adopters premium. Better to wait 12 months after they come out and get them cheap and with the bugs ironed out instead of paying through the nose on launch to be a guinea pig.
People will not be brainwashed into HD. They're only taking up digital television because they're being forced to by Sky switching off analogue satellite and the Govt shutting down analogue terrestrial.0 -
In America they are selling HD DVD players for $99 (£50!!!) which is still the price of normal DVD players over here so I would definitely wait.
Maybe while you are waiting you could get a HD console (xbox 360 or PS3).
The PS3 has bluray built in and you can buy a HD DVD add-on for the 360 should you want to in the future.
On the subject of films the studios are all over the place shifting between which formats they are supporting so I wouldn't let that sway you other than I guess Sony and its subsidiaries would be sticking with bluray because of the PS3.

Is it really worth worrying about a HD or Blu Ray player for a 23" TV?.....0
