Noise from shower head?

Just wondering if anyone can advise on this problem.
We moved into our new home last September and within our bathroom we have a huge walk in rainfall shower. All the pipes are concealed behind the tiling and all we have is a piece of metal coming out of the wall with the shower head attached – if you get my drift.
With the original square shower head that was there when we moved in, the water was just trickling out from the holes and it was also gushing from the sides so from the advice of our plumber, we replaced it with an identical but much smaller head from Screwfix and it worked much better. The plumber said we could just buy it and fit it ourselves rather than paying him to do it.
As the months have passed by, there’s been an increasingly loud noise coming from the pipes/pump behind the shower wall which sounds like a water pressure issue, but it never used to be there when we had the old shower head. When it first started making the noise, turning the head round seemed to eradicate it but now that doesn’t work. I’m convinced it’s since we changed the shower head and it’s because it’s somehow not fixed properly? Or would fitting a much smaller head to that kind of shower cause a problem?
We did have a leak from the shower which was caused by the bottom of the tray not being sealed properly (hence the need for the plumber in the first place) and he seemed to think the whole thing was a bit of a botch job. Is it more likely that the problem is behind the wall rather than from the shower head?
We are reluctant to take it off as when we took the old one off, it damaged it and it was unable to go back on but I think we might need to take it off just to test if it makes the noise? Unless anyone has any other ideas?
Thanks

Is it possible that the new, smaller head is incompatible with the pressure of the system? The noise you hear might be the pump straining against the resistance of the smaller head.0
