Extension - Flying Freehold

We are in the very early stages of thinking about getting a 2 story extension (4m out, so will need planning permission).
Our house has a flying freehold and the neighbours have a 4m single story extension. Currently we have no access into our garden via the shared alleyway, we have to go through our conservatory. But our neighbour can get straight into theirs.
Would our extension, in effect, extend the shared access alley down the side of the extensions, so we could extend the full house width and have a cut in so we can get into our garden?
Hard to explain so apologies is this makes no sense at all.
