Cheap printer

Steer clear of Inkjets for low volume usage, you will spend your life clearing jets and changing cartridges.
Cheap Brother laserjet has served me well for quite a few years now, it's very happy with compatible cartridges which do lots of pages and are pretty inexpensive.0 -
I cart around an old Samsung Xpress M2022 mono laser in a heavy duty Tesco shopping bag, it’s never let me down. The personal mono laser printers are neither large nor heavy. Either a Brother or Samsung mono laser is a good choice, many on here recommend them.0

£16 for 30 3rd party cartridges for a Epson SX405 is what I use

They are as good as OEM ones and come at approx 1/10 of the price !!
The printer/scanner cost me £45 and the cartridges are virtually free...
Never had a cartrdge fail and they are as bright and long lasting as OEM ones
The equivalent printer today is the XP455 - at £40 from Curry etc - and 3rd party cartridges are https://www.amazon.co.uk/Colour-Direct-Compatible-Cartridges-Replacement/dp/B01AAGVRNW/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1549798819&rpp=bsm%3A%2F%2F%0D%0AEpson++++++++%5EEPSON%7C%5E%7CXP-455%5EXP-455%7Cdropdown&sr=1-2&refinements=p_n_is-global-store-asin%3A11259240031 - at £16 for 10
Still considerably cheaper than OEM but 3 times the cost of the previous generation !0 -
Thanks for all the advice. My own inkjet printer regularly needs cleaning, so I'm well aware of the problems of low usage. Fortunately negotations have produced an agreement that we can leave the printer out all the time, so we will be able to get a cheap laser.0
