    Anyway, here is the list of work needed for the car.
    New clutch £260
    New timing belt due in 5k miles £280
    Some emissions problem (£200 to £400) relating to running rich

    Car current value as-is £400. Car has potential to be valued at £800 once all work done.
    So you're talking about spending £800+ to end up with something (potentially) worth £800 that doesn't suit your situation any more?

    As others have said, avoid the premium marques like the plague.

    Look at Octavia estates Mondeo estates or similar. Though I would stick with petrol and these won't be as easy to find as the diesels.

    Ignore the headline mpg on the Outlander. When it is not using electric it's not that efficient. It's not a bad car to drive, just ignore the 100+mpg advertised.

    Yeah diesels, you gotto avoid unless you're getting a 2016 and newer (even then it is a gamble as you dont know if TFL will raise the standards of emissions for ULEZ). My 2002 golf meets euro 4 and is a petrol so it's ulez free!

    I liked the phev because there are loads of charging points near where I live. I was intending on using it as a plugin electric vehicle for 20 mile daily commute.
