Child benefit and state pension

I’m a stay at home mum and I was just reading that as long as I register for child benefit I will automatically get my ni contributions paid (as long as my youngest child is below 12). Will that still apply to me if child benefit is in my husband’s name or should we phone them and change it to my name? Thanks in advance for your advice.

No, I don't believe it will - you need to get it changed to your own name. If this has been gonig on for a while I think there is a form your husband can complete to transfer credits for past years to you.

we changed ours to DH's name when he stopped working, seems to been credited with NI for those years so would help if you changed the name
  • Agreed, the person who needs the credits is the one who should be named.

No. Credits only go to one person.

And if he's earning and paying NI, those credits are basically going to waste, and you won't be getting any credits yourself. - you need to get them transferred to your name.

And you may want to see about getting historical credits reassigned as well if that's applicable.

No it wont/ And the CB should be in the mothers name ALWAYS if she is the main carer and not working. Why would it be in yoru husbands name?
  • Definitely transfer the child benefit to your name.

And if you haven't already, transfer some of your unused personal allowance to your husband to save tax:

OP I'm looking at this too. The Child Benefit (CB) is in my name but I'm working and my spouse is looking after our little one. We're planning to transfer the CB into my spouse's name... has anyone done this? How long did it take? I'm just a little worried because I don't want to lose any CB or National Insurance Credits while they process the change of name.

We're also looking to see if my spouse needs to complete form CF411A. This form will allow me to transfer the National Insurance Credits I've already gained into my spouse's name. Has anyone else completed form CF411A? I'm looking to transfer the Credits I've gained for this current tax year. Does anyone know when I can do this?

Don't you need to have a good reason to get more than the current tax year changed to the other person name?

No, and why is your husband claiming CB when you are the one staying at home?

That benefit should be going to you, not your husband. That was the thinking behind the benefit - it should go where it is needed, i.e. to be spent on the children.
