Kitchen fitting

I am just in the process of having an expensive kitchen fitted, 2 weeks ago the plan was fitters in on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and template taken on Thursday for the worktop. Fitters finished in 2 days but the worktop company still has not turned up, the kitchen company cannot tell us when they are coming, At this time I only have units fitted, no oven, no hob, no sink and to add the stress every cupboard, either has damage or 50 screw holes either side which the fitter has explained is due to it being flat pack. I have signed up to buy now pay in 12 months, the cost of the kitchen is £15,000 including fitting 50% off units, I also paid the fitter for specialist jobs. I have been in discussion with the kitchen company about worktops, fitting and quality of the kitchen, they have refunded me £357 for the worktop issue and I have someone coming around to do a full report on the fitting so far. Do I have a right to say take this away and cancel the deal so that I can go elsewhere ?

All flat pack kitchen cupboards will have many excess holes on the inside of each side, just get some plastic bungs to fill them. the outside edges will presumably have end panels on anyway.

Not wren is it? If it is then you may have holes where there shouldn’t be any

They are not screw holes, they are pre drilled holes for different combinations of shelf's etc.

This would have all be visible when you viewed the kitchen in store.

    No Wickes ...

From your first post I knew it was Wickes

Mine was started in September and finished shed the in late January. They ended up having a temporary work surface fitted so I could use most of it.

Do not sign the fitters final document until you are 100% happy and make sure the finance company are aware and dont start taking payments. They will also fight your corner with Wickes and get you a small amount of compensation if you are lucky.

If the kitchen units ship with the holes drilled in them, then the kitchen fitter isn't responsible for them. When you viewed the units at Wickes, did their showroom units have the same holes? If not, then you might have a case for misrepresentation against the retailer? Did you buy the units from Wickes? Did you engage the fitter separately or is the whole contract with Wickes?

You could pop along to their store with a camera and take some photos. If their showroom units have the same or similar number of holes, then I'm afraid it is a lack of diligence on your part and you have no recourse to the retailer.

The lack of a functioning kitchen is all down to the worktop sub-contractor letting down your kitchen fitter. Sometime these things happen in business; they shouldn't, but they do. You should give your kitchen fitter a reasonable amount of time to find another sub-contractor, and if they don't within the time you agree with them, you will find the sub-contractor and pay them only for the work done to date.

Based on what the two problems you describe (lack of worktops and unexpected holes in units) I don't think you have any rights to say "Take it away, I'm not paying for it". Are there any other problems?
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • Thanks for the advise I will definitely let the finance company know, a full report and photos have been taken by wickes due to all the damage to the units etc.
