iPhone joined WiFi without password

Vodafone sent us a new router and I opened Settings and put in the new password on my iPad so it would hook up with the new network. Then I opened Settings on my iPhone (in order to repeat the process) only to find it had connected automatically. It's a secure connection (there's a little padlock next to the WiFi info in Settings) so how did it do this?

Is this right? Is a new feature I'm not aware of? It seems a bit insecure to me.

Yeah this will be linking/syncing between the two devices if they share the same Apple ID.

And the same happens if you have family sharing switched on, although you do get asked if you want to share the password before it happens.

(it may also happen from other apple devices on the same network that are not family shared, but may have dreamt that).

Quite handy in my opinion and as its tied into security of the first device is no less secure.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, both devices signed in to the same Apple ID.
Another Apple feature I was unaware of.

Just read this again - not sure what you mean by 'linked'? Both use the same Apple ID. Is that it?

Sharing passwords and keys between iOS devices linked by being signed into the same Apple ID came with iOS 11 iirc.

My Samsung Gear Fit2 watch will join any wifi network my Samsung phone has also got stored without any further input from me so it isn't just Apple products.
