thanks for this post and replies, it came up in a search as is similar to an issue I have of receiving a cheque for house sale in Europe. I will update this thread when I have sorted it, this post will give me a marker of where to come back to.0

Might be worth checking out Starling - free transfers between Euro and Stirling current accounts at the moment. No idea if this applies to larger sums, though!0
