Cold water tank overflow dripping

Hi,

We have a cold water tank in the loft and recently it seems to be dripping out of the overflow. It seems to stop if we use a lot of water during the day but starts again. Had a look in the loft and the ballcock valve is submerged about 90% in the water. When I had a look the water was dripping into the tank. The water level was about 5 inches of the top of the tank, not sure if that is quite high or not?

Going to get a new valve from b&q today. Would it be an easy enough fix to do ourselves (Not much plumbing diy experience)?

Thanks!

I always fix ours, and I'm not a plumber by trade. It's normally a simple job.

Turn mains water off should be a turn off valve at tank. Split valve take out rubber seal, get replacement seal. A pound or so.

Find the stop !!!! on the water pipe that goes into your loft.

Until you have fixed the issue turn the tap off for most of the day and only turn it on until the tank is refilled

  • If its just dripping a bit, I would fix it myself but would wait until next weekend when the temp will be 11 C rather than the -4 we had this morning ! It is an easy job but you might need to buy some adjustable spanners and grips as you may find the old valve is tight and ceased up if its been there for years

Good advice, but as usual with new posters we will probably never hear the solution/outcome.

Personally, I would opt to do it now rather than when it's warmer.

It's possible that a very slow drip could allow for water in the overflow pipe to gradually build up as a layer of ice and if this happens and it totally blocks the pipe, the water will then go over the top of the tank.
