Internet constantly slow... WHY?!

Hi,
First off, I'm absolutely useless when it comes to techie stuff, so please excuse my appalling descriptions!
My internet is constantly slow. It gets worse throughout the day. For instance, at the minute I'm running one IE page, with this forum on. It has taken 10 minutes to load from google!
I run XoftSpy and Avast, so I don't *think* it's a virus (though if anyone knows another anti-virus or anti-spyware I can run, please recommend!)
It doesn't seem to just extend to the internet either, though other programs are better. If I go from being online to playing a game, then the game runs slowly.
I'm on a laptop using a wireless connection. Is this affecting it? According to the little toolbar icon, I have a 'very good' connection. I don't know if this is my connection to the rest of the network, or the internet though. I'm with Virgin Media broadband, I've checked the modem and it's running fine. The other computers on the network don't seem to have this problem either, so I don't think it's my ISP.
I'm not really sure what other information to give, I'm using IE version 7, with Windows XP. I don't think it's an issue of RAM or anything, I de-frag regularly and I always have about 60% free space.
Also, when I shut the laptop down, it very often (about 95% of the time) starts to shut down, then cuts to a blue screen saying there is an error, and starts dumping memory. I have no idea why it does this. Is it my computer? Or, more likely, is it me?!
Any opinions gratefully received, thanks

I'm also with virgin media and I'm afraid I believe it is their fault. I am experiencing exactly the same things and I have heard of others complaining about this slowness. Ntl were never superfast but ever since they became virgin media the broadband has gone to hell. I would not worry about the rest of your setup as there is probably nothing wrong with it. I bet you feel extremely frustrated cause that is how I feel about virgin media these days.0

think youve answered your own question. its the lappy not the internet connection.
have you tried all the options in the security sticky at the top here?
i would try hijackthis esp and have a look at what comes up.
run adaware too, and poss ccleaner to have a general clean up.
another option is to restore your OS to when/last time it was running ok.Get some gorm.0 -
Trouble is running hijack this is all very well if you know what to look for.
to most of us its just a mass of figures.0 -
The problem is virgin. I have been on the phone to them eventually they explain that they are capping peoples usage, depending on how much you have been using.
So in effect if you are paying for a 20mb line you are not getting any where near that.
It's is explained on the web site but you have to dig deep to find it. Hence why I spent £9 on the phone to them cos now the broadband query line is 25p a minute.0 -

Hi,
above link doesn't seem to work, but yes you can copy and paste, wouldn't fancy trying to re-type hjt log, my eyes would be a bit funny after a while. :rotfl:
Have a look at this link.0 -

Have a look at this link.
The link worked yesterday before the server failure and presumably will work again when restored from backup.
The HJT output can be saved to a file. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
