HSBC Bank Account

I applied for a HSBC Bank Account this morning to get the £75 switch incentive, and supplied details of my donor account that I am switching.

It said the earliest switch date that it could complete is 15th Feb, I haven't had any emails from them confirming anything and they said they need to do some more checks first.

Normal procedure? The few switches I've done before with different banks opened an account on the spot and started the switch process straight away.

  • Unfortunately this is normal procedure. There are no confirmation emails or reference numbers. When I applied for my Advance account last year, the first I heard I had been successful was when my card arrived in the mail about 2 weeks afterwards. They are well known for being slow so I would be prepared to wait a bit - but if you're stressing you could give them a call to double check they have received your application.

Okay thanks. Just thought it was a bit odd.

I've had an email now about opening it, but no account info. Switch is supposed to complete on the 15th Feb, earliest I could select. So it should start next week.

I switched to HSBC last year - it was a bit slow but once everything was up and running I got the £75 within a few days

I just got two emails saying that urgent attention is required for documents I need to take action on and view them online, but they haven't given me any account details or log in details yet?

They were sent 4 minutes apart. Not sure it looks like a legitimate email?
  • Just read that HSBC is the world’s 13th biggest funder of fossil fuels - with a particular penchant for coal expansion in South East Asia. Apparently it laundered money for Mexican and Colombian drug cartels and is big on tax evasion in Switzerland. Is this true? If so I think I'll just take the bribe and run

Probably partially true. That means there are 12 bigger funders of fossil fuels of course....
You are no doubt a 'funder of fossil fuels' as you probably have an ice vehicle, gas or oil boiler, buy things have been grown using fossil fuels, transported using fossil fuels etc etc

If we weren't meant to use fossil fuels, why do they exist?
  • Reply to Fredar:
Fosil fuels are nature's way of storing carbon.  They are formed by decaying carbon from wood, peat et al formed during higher temperatures. Then pressure helps form hydro-carbon.
Similar action by crustaceans during high temperatures falling to the bottom of the sea helps absorb carbon by the formation of limestones; calcium carbonates.
I make no judgement on the use of fosil fuels or indeed the use of lime.

They exist because we had few alternatives and knew no better when they started to be used in the 19th century
