Which gives you more of the sort of quality of life you want - a home which isn't a money pit (i.e. move), or a short reliable journey (stay put and go on feeding your voracious house...`).
  • Hi all thank you for the advice, public transport is not an option as the bus will take 2 hours and there is no train, my wife dose not drive so I can take the car if needed to, bad weather or bike of the road,

I moved 60 miles away from work 30 years ago, having assessed the rail commute beforehand and deciding it was doable. Then my employer moved offices by 2 miles and it added 1 hr each way to my journey. It's the unpredictability that's difficult.

If your living in a house which you feel is never finished and your only option is to move 16 miles away from work to get a house your happy with then it sounds like a good decision. The extra time on the commute is worth it if your going to be happier for the time your at home.

I live about 1 mile from where i work which makes it really convenient for things like deliveries or when i have to get my boiler serviced etc. I can get home so quickly that i can arrange for them to call me when they are almost there and i can pop home. Obviously not all workplaces would allow this but it saves so much time not having to take days off.

Don't get a rubbish motorbike then, and get decent breakdown cover.
  • my previous commute was Southampton to Andover - I quit after 5 months, much too painful. I am going to be moving and aim to get a house with about 30 minute tops of a commute. Been stuck in traffic is no fun and there are more important things to do in life.

If you have a motorbike well and good but i would not fancy stuck in one for an extended amount of time either.
